Wike Splashes State Honors, N12m Each on Rivers United Players Over NPFL Triumph

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has bestowed the Governors Medal Service Award (GMSA) on players of Rivers United, winners of 2021/2022 Nigerian Professional Football League trophy.

The players were also presented with a cash gift of $20,000 (N12 million) each for their triumphant display.

The move by the presidential aspirant occured when the players led by presentstion Rivers Commissioner of Sports, Barr.Chris Green, the club’s Technical Manager Stanley Eguma and team captain, Festus Austin presented him with the trophy in Port Harcourt, on Thursday.

The governor also promised the players another $20,000 each if they qualify for the CAF Champions League group stages.

To help the team prepare for the continental championship next year, Governor Wike approved an expense-paid European pre season camping in Madrid, Spain.

Rivers United claimed its first NPFL title after defeating Gombe United 1-0 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, on Sunday.
