Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has cautioned that founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party will not allow defectors from other political platforms to destabilise or “kill” the PDP.

Speaking during the 104th National Executive Committee meeting held at his Abuja residence on Sunday, Wike criticised a faction of the party for allegedly disregarding two valid Federal High Court judgments while proceeding to conduct what he called an “illegal convention.”

He accused the group of shopping for favourable court orders after ignoring binding rulings. According to him, the faction first approached a State High Court to secure an ex parte order compelling the convention to hold, and later sought recognition from a Federal High Court despite already conducting the exercise in defiance of existing judgments.

Wike questioned the rationale behind such actions, noting that a group recognised by INEC should not continually seek judicial endorsements that contradict settled legal positions.

The minister warned that bypassing lawful processes threatens the survival of the PDP, stressing that the party cannot earn public trust if it disobeys its own rules and court directives. He urged leaders to show sincerity and discipline in rebuilding the platform founded in 1998.

Meanwhile, the PDP Board of Trustees has advised the NEC to immediately set up a Caretaker Committee as the tenure of the current National Working Committee expires on Monday.

BoT chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, said the transition would ensure stability, continuity and strict adherence to the party’s constitution.

He noted that caretaker structures were already being established in states and zones like Anambra and the South-East where congresses had not been previously held.

He added that the move forms part of ongoing internal reforms aimed at restoring confidence among members and strengthening the PDP’s organisational framework.
