Wizkid Reflects on Mother’s Loss in New Song with Asake

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Ayodeji Balogun, better known as Wizkid, continues to mourn the loss of his mother, Mrs. Jane Morayo Balogun. This grief is deeply felt in his latest collaboration with Asake on the track “MMS.”

In his verse, Wizkid opens up about how his mother’s passing has profoundly affected him, revealing that he felt lost after her death but eventually found his purpose.

“You can’t escape who you are. What will be, is cast in stone… Why did Mama leave me? It’s not right. Lost myself, but I found my purpose. Every day, I know I’m blessed… There’s nothing a man hasn’t faced. It’s just life.”

Wizkid’s mother passed away on August 18, 2023, in London. On what would have been her birthday on July 4th, he expressed how empty his life feels without her, sharing that he misses her daily and that his heart is permanently broken.

In tribute to her, Wizkid has announced plans to release a new album titled “Morayo,” named after his mother’s middle name.
