A Japanese woman, Yumi Yoshino, who said she hid her late mother’s corpse in a freezer in her apartment for over 10 years told police she feared eviction if the death was discovered.

The 48-years-old woman was held on “suspicion of abandoning and hiding a female body” found on Wednesday, January 27, in a freezer in her apartment in Tokyo, AFP reported.

Yoshino on confession said after finding her mother dead 10 years ago, she deliberately hid the dead body because she didn’t want to move out of the home they shared.

The mother, learnt to have been aged around 60 before her demise, was named on the lease of the apartment in a municipal housing complex.

Yoshino had been forced to vacate the apartment in mid-January after missing rent payments before a cleaner then discovered the body in a freezer hidden in a closet.

Meanwhile, report also indicate that an autopsy could not determine the time and cause of the woman’s death as there were no visible wounds on the frozen body.

The body had been reportedly bent to fit in the freezer, police said.

Yohino was arrested in a hotel in the city of Chiba, near Tokyo on Friday, January 29.
