Nigerian women flocked to the National Assembly in large numbers to protest the rejection of women-related bills during the plenary session on Tuesday.
A bill, for example, that sought to appoint at least ten women as ministers and commissioners in federal and state governments failed in the upper legislative chamber.
There were 88 senators who registered to vote. 44 senators voted in favor, 43 opposed, and 1 abstained.

The bill, which was intended to ensure women’s inclusion in governance, failed to garner the 73 votes required for passage.
Despite assurances from the House leadership on the bills, the women expressed disappointment.
As a result, the gate to the National Assembly was closed.
Gender equality, according to the women, is a development issue, not a women’s issue.
They are urging lawmakers to reconsider the rejected bills.
