Chaos in a Senate hearing as Oby Ezekwesili and Senator Nwaebonyi trade insults.

The clash led to an abrupt adjournment of the hearing as the case was already in court.

A Senate hearing has turned into a marketplace of insults as a fracas broke out between Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, the senator representing Ebonyi North, and former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili. This resulted in a heated argument between the duo on Tuesday, 25th March 2025.

The chaotic exchange happened during the meeting of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions hearing over a fresh petition submitted by suspended senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Oby Ezekwesili attended the hearing alongside Abiola Akiode, counsel to Akpoti-Uduaghan, and the petitioner, Zubairu Yakubu.

The brawl started when Yakubu attempted to speak while the committee chairman, Neda Imaseun, was still addressing the panel.

Yakubu was asked to mute his mic, however, Ezekwesili tried to intervene but she was interrupted by Senator Nwaebonyi who served as a witness to Akpabio.

This led to a sharp exchange that turned the hearing into a chaotic scene. “Can you shut up, compose yourself and stop making noise,” Ezekwesili told Nwaebonyi.” In anger, Nwaebonyi replied, ” Shut up! You’re a fool. What do you mean? Why are you talking to me like that? I will not take it. You’re an insult to womanhood. People like you cannot be here, hooligan.”

Ezekwesili fired back at him “You are the hooligan.” This fracas escalated into a full-blown trade of words as other members tried to calm the duo.

As a result of the disruption, Imaseun announced that the case was already before a court, leading to an abrupt adjournment of the hearing.
