The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has released tips on how to identify fake drinks.
The above follows NAFDAC’s recent crackdown on counterfeit beverages worth 750 million, including popular brands, consumers must remain vigilant.
To help citizens distinguish genuine drinks from potential counterfeits, NAFDAC has provided a comprehensive list of tips:
- Check NAFDAC Registration:
Always purchase drinks that are NAFDAC-registered. Reputable and licensed retailers, bars, and supermarkets should only carry products with NAFDAC certification.

- Beware of Unbelievable Prices:
If a product is being sold significantly below its standard price or lacks the usual taxes on liquors, it could be a red flag for counterfeiting.
- Examine Packaging Quality:
Inspect the packaging for signs of poor quality, spelling errors, and unusually shaped bottles. Legitimate products maintain high packaging standards.
- Verify Manufacturer Information:
Look for the contact details and address of the manufacturer on the label. The absence of this information may indicate a counterfeit product.
- Inspect the Seal:
A broken or damaged seal on the bottle suggests tampering. Avoid consuming beverages with compromised seals as they may be unsafe.
- Authenticate Barcodes:
Use barcode scanning apps on your mobile device to verify the product’s authenticity. If the scanned information doesn’t match the correct product, exercise caution.
- Trust Your Senses:
Be wary of unusual smells. If a drink emits a strong odor resembling paint stripper or nail polish remover, it’s likely to be fake and should be avoided.
By staying informed and following the above guidelines, the agency assured that consumers can make safer choices in the face of the growing challenge of counterfeit beverages, and other consumables during the yuletide season and in the future.
