  • The board confirmed that 200 orphans have been screened and selected for the mass wedding in Gusau.
  • The ceremony, funded by the Zamfara Zakkat Board, will take place on November 23, 2025.
  • Zamfara has a long history of state-sponsored mass weddings involving orphans, widows, and divorcees.
  • Previous mass wedding programmes have drawn mixed reactions over welfare priorities and long-term impact.

The Zamfara State Zakkat and Endowment Board has completed arrangements for the wedding of two hundred orphans, continuing a long-running tradition of state-sponsored mass weddings in the region.

In a statement released in Gusau, the board’s spokesman, Comrade Jamilu Sani Tsafe, said preparations for the event had been fully concluded. He explained that the Executive Secretary, Malam Habibu Balarabe, confirmed that the wedding ceremony would hold on Monday, November 23, 2025, at the board’s premises.

According to the statement, all selected participants had already been screened to ensure they qualify for the support being provided. Balarabe noted that the gesture is aimed at assisting vulnerable young people who lack the financial means to marry on their own.

This is not the first time Zamfara has made headlines for sponsoring mass weddings. In 2017, the state funded similar ceremonies for widows and divorcees. Two years earlier, the government allocated N40 million to organize mass weddings for orphans, widows, and divorcees, an initiative that sparked divided opinions among Nigerians, with some praising it as charity and others questioning its long-term social impact.

The latest round of state-sponsored marriages again raises debates about whether mass weddings solve or deepen the challenges facing orphans and vulnerable youths in the region.
