  • Survivors accuse Buhari’s government of mass killing and secret burials in Kaduna.

  • Over 300 Shiites were massacred in December 2015 during military operations.

  • Families say they will never forgive Buhari as his legacy stirs controversy.

The 2015 massacre of Shiite Muslims in Zaria has returned to the national spotlight following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

Survivors and relatives of the victims have accused Buhari’s administration of orchestrating a mass slaughter and secretly burying their loved ones in mass graves.

Journalist Saifullahi M. Kabir, in emotional Facebook posts, mourned the victims and condemned Buhari, describing him as responsible for what he called “state-sponsored terrorism.” Kabir claimed that the military crackdown ordered by Buhari led to hundreds of deaths, including young students and religious leaders.

“None of their bodies were found, let alone given proper burials as prescribed by Islam. Buhari’s soldiers burned some alive and buried others in mass graves at Mando cemetery in Kaduna,” Kabir wrote. He cited names like Fatima Ali Munjibir and Khadija Ibrahim Dasuqi among those killed during the siege.

Kabir also shared photos of victims and recounted how families have struggled with pain and loss nearly a decade later. He narrated how Hajiya Jummai Ahmad Karofi, whose family was killed during the attack, still lives with bullets in her body and continues to seek justice.

“May Allah avenge us on Buhari’s behalf. May Allah accept the martyrdom of our martyrs,” Kabir declared in a prayerful post. He also alleged that Buhari’s forces stormed Sheikh Zakzaky’s residence in December 2015 and killed worshippers, including Sumayyah Isa Hasan, the daughter of Professor Isa Mshelgaru.

Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, reported that more than 300 members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) were killed in the violent military operation.

The Nigerian Army said the group had blocked a road being used by the Chief of Army Staff, but critics accused the government of excessive force and religious persecution.

Buhari never issued a public apology nor prosecuted any senior officers for the killings, a fact that has deepened the anger among Shiite communities.

As Buhari’s death sparks mourning and praise from his supporters, families of the Zaria victims insist they will not forgive him for what they describe as “a dark chapter in Nigeria’s history.”
