100-level Student Dies as Fire Guts Female Hostel in Taraba

A 100-level student identified as Emoseh Lawi, has died following a fire outbreak in a female hostel at Taraba State University.

Daily Report Nigeria gathered the incident occurred on Friday night, December 10, at Zenith Hostel in the school.

Lawi, who was a student of the Tourism Department was said to have gone for an all-night reading in preparation for an exam.

It was gathered that Lawi came back from the night reading very weak and decided to sleep. The fire according to eyewitnesses started while she was fast asleep.

It was her fellow students who forced the door, windows open and pulled her out. She was immediately rushed to the state specialist hospital where she was confirmed dead.

An eyewitness said;

”I was told the said lady went to read all through the night for her examination and returned very weak, hence she slept off. The cause of this fire is from an electrical socket which sparked repeatedly and suddenly gutted the mattress next to it from which it spread all over,” an eyewitness told newsmen.

“When she was brought out of the hostel, she was totally unconscious and could barely stand before the school security men came to pick her up with a Toyota Hilux and she was rushed to the hospital,”

The fire which affected some parts of the hostel damaged property and other valuables.

Director Sa’ad Mohammed, while confirming the incident, said the main cause of the fire outbreak must be ascertained so as to
avoid future occurrence.

Spokeserson of the The Taraba State Police Command, Usman Abdullahi, who also confirmed the incident, said the police have commenced investigation.
