2022 WCQ: Drama at Quito as Alisson’s Double Reds Change to Yellow After VAR’s Review

Thursday’s World Cup qualifier between two South American football teams, Ecuador and Brazil was remarkably dramatic.

And the drama centred on the Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper, Alisson Becker who was sent off twice only for VAR to have saved his side.

Real Madrid midfielder, Casemiro put the Canarinho ahead just 6 minutes into the game.

Felix Torres then levelled the match through Gonzalo Plata’s assist in the last last 15 minute.

In the match, Ecuador goalkeeper, Alexander Domínguez was shown a straight red card at one-quarter of the first half.

The 34-year-old was sent-off for a reckless challenge on Matthewus Cunha after attempting to clear the ball.

However, the rage did not end just like that as it will even suffice to say the drama just started.

In the 20th minute, Brazil were also reduced to 10 men when Emerson Royal of Tottenham Hotspur was also sent out of the pitch for double unrevealed accusals.

Colombian referee,Wilmar Roldan also showed Verde-Amarela another red following Becker’s reckless tackle.

However, after VAR’s intervention, the goalkeeper who was sent off by the referee made to stay back to continue the match after the red was changed to yellow card.

Gustavo Alfaro’s side mustered up in the second forty-five minutes and the 29-year-old Alisson again thought he had been booked a red card while injured.

Again, the VAR after review, prevented the Best FIFA Goalkeeper of 2019 from being sent off.

It’s uncommon to see a player sent off twice in one game, isn’t it? And if you think it is, it’s therefore, unusual for VAR to intervene twice in a player’s two charges as it happened in the dramatic 1-1 tie.
