Whenever Victor Osimhen dons the green and white of Nigeria, everything changes.

His presence brings a sense of urgency, heightens expectations, and sharpens the Super Eagles’ edge.

As Nigeria gears up for a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda this Friday, fans are buzzing to see the Napoli forward back on the pitch after missing the first four matches.

Nigeria’s Offensive Struggles Without Osimhen

Without their star striker, the Super Eagles have struggled to find the attacking flair that usually makes them a powerhouse.

With only four goals in four games, Nigeria’s offense has felt lackluster and disjointed.

The return of their top scorer is expected to reignite that spark. But can Osimhen make an immediate impact and lead Nigeria to a much-needed victory in Kigali?

Osimhen’s Record in World Cup Qualifiers: A Striker on the Brink of History

Even though he missed the early rounds of this qualification campaign, Victor Osimhen has already made his mark among Nigeria’s top scorers in World Cup qualifying history.

With four goals in eight matches, he stands shoulder to shoulder with legends like Segun Odegbami, Victor Agali, and Daniel Amokachi.

At the pinnacle of the chart, Obafemi Martins holds the title of Nigeria’s all-time leading World Cup qualifier goal scorer with 10 goals in 12 matches.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni is right behind him with six goals, while Kanu, Victor Moses, and Kelechi Iheanacho each have five.

Osimhen is on the brink of making history. Just one more goal will elevate him into the group of players with five goals, and six additional goals will see him match Martins’ record.

Given his phenomenal form—scoring 20 goals in 22 matches for Galatasaray—he has every opportunity to climb the ranks swiftly.

A Tough Battle Against Rwanda’s Defense

While Osimhen shines in high-pressure situations, Rwanda’s defense has shown remarkable resilience.

The Amavubi defenders, particularly Ange Mutsinzi and Thierry Manzi, managed to keep him in check during the previous match, resulting in a 0-0 draw for Nigeria.

Mutsinzi, especially, has a knack for silencing top forwards, having kept Sadio Mané at bay for 95 minutes in an AFCON qualifier before conceding a late penalty.

This time around, though, Osimhen will be starting from the get-go, which will make it a much tougher challenge for Rwanda’s backline.

His relentless pressing, quick footwork, and deadly finishing will demand their full focus for the entire 90 minutes.

Can the Amavubi defense hold strong once more, or will Osimhen’s insatiable hunger for goals be too overwhelming?

Why This is a Must-Win for Nigeria

With their hopes of qualification hanging in the balance, the Super Eagles can’t afford another setback.

Osimhen’s return could be just the spark the team needs to regain their momentum.

His knack for creating chances out of thin air, winning aerial battles, and finishing with precision makes him Nigeria’s most potent weapon.

But this match is about more than just securing three vital points; it’s also a chance for Osimhen to further cement his legacy.

Already Nigeria’s second all-time top scorer across all competitions, climbing higher in the World Cup qualifier goal rankings would only strengthen his status among the nation’s greatest strikers.

Friday’s match in Kigali is more than just another qualifier. It’s a golden opportunity for Victor Osimhen to shine on the international stage and help lead Nigeria closer to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles are counting on their number nine—and all eyes will be on him.
