Assistant Corps Marshal Rotimi Adeleye, the Zone 12 (Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno States) Zonal Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), told newsmen in Bauchi State on Tuesday.

He said:

“This is to inform you of very fatal crashes that occurred this morning along Maiduguri to Damaturu route very close to a community called JAKANA at about 10:00am.

“There were three involved automobiles (2 Hummer Buses and 1 Golf Saloon). A total of 37 deaths have been officially reported, 8 injuries, and most of them are unrecognizably burned. In addition to deploying personnel for the rescue, the FRSC coordinated with the police chief of Borno State to secure a court order for the mass burial of the victims who had been completely burned beyond recognition.

“The Fire Service was also informed because one of the three involved vehicles was still on fire at the time. The injured were transported to UMTH and the public hospital in Maiduguri.

“There were two Hummer buses traveling in different directions. One had a burst tire and collided head-on, setting off a fire. They were barely affected when the Golf ran into them from behind. Overspeeding is a major contributing factor. This was easily preventable.”
