Niger Delta Communities Harp on Peaceful PIA Processes

Two Niger Delta communities have led the way towards the full implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) for all oil bearing communities.

This follows a peaceful meeting between Opuama and Tsekelewu communities of Egbema kingdom, Warri North local government area of Delta State, which held in Sapele on Saturday.

The meeting was convened by the Bolowei of Egbema, Alhaji Emmanuel Omoko and was attended by Welfare Associations, Oil and Gas Committees as well as Bloc leadership of the communities.

According to Omoko, the meeting was aimed at charting a peaceful implementation process of the PIA between the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Conoil and the communities.

The Bolowei explained that “there is a great need for host communities to engage and interact in a bid not to cause unnecessary crises among ourselves.”

Omoko said this in reaction to reports that some persons were building new houses and counting non-existing ones and villages in an attempt to gain more from the system.

He called on erring individuals to stop the rumoured practice to enable all parties achieve a peaceful PIA process in the communities.

He added that here will be a larger meeting between the leadership of both Opuama and Tsekelewu communities to further deliberate on same issues, while calling on oil bearing communities in the country to tow the same path.
