Tinubu Departs For AU’s 5th Mid-year Meeting in Kenya

President Bola Tinubu has departed for Nairobi, Kenya, to attend the 5th mid-year coordination meeting of the African Union (AU).

The announcement was made by Tinubu’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, in a statement released on July 14.

The meeting, scheduled for July 16, will bring together African leaders, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Regional Mechanisms (RMs), and African Union member states.

As the newly appointed chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, mECOWAS, the President will provide a comprehensive report on the activities and progress of the sub-regional body, including trade, free movement of persons, investment promotion, infrastructure development, peace, security, and stability.

The AU mid-year meeting, with the theme “Acceleration of African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA, Implementation,” aimed to promote unity within the Bureau of the AU Assembly.

The Bureau included Heads of State and Governments of Comoros, Botswana, Burundi, and Senegal, as well as the leaders of the eight RECs.

The RECs included ECOWAS, chaired by Nigeria, the East African Community (EAC), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
