Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag explained his decision to appoint Bruno Fernandes as the new captain, praising him as a “great inspiration” and a true leader for the team.

While Harry Maguire was stripped of the armband, Ten Hag emphasized that Maguire remains an essential part of the squad and is valued for his contributions.

Announcing the Portuguese midfielder as the club’s captain for the upcoming season, Ten Hag highlighted Fernandes’ exemplary performance as a leader and his ability to guide and build the team.

He described Fernandes as an example and mirror for other players to follow, with his unwavering dedication to becoming a better footballer and his strong game understanding.

Ten Hag emphasized the importance of having leaders on the pitch, players who can control the quality of the team’s performance and act as intermediaries between the manager and the squad.

He expressed confidence in Bruno Fernandes’ capabilities to fulfill this role effectively.

However, the manager also emphasized that Fernandes can’t shoulder the burden alone and that the team needs more leaders to form a strong bond and guide the team in the right direction.

Ten Hag stressed that consistency requires the contribution of the entire squad and expressed confidence that Maguire would compete for his place, as he did in the previous year.

Bruno Fernandes will lead the team as the full-time United captain in their upcoming match against Arsenal on Saturday, while Maguire will continue to play a vital role in the team’s success.
