Niger President, Mohamed Bazoum, has been forcibly removed from power by the presidential Guard.

The army issued an ultimatum and detained the president, sealing off access to his residence and offices.

Talks broke down, and the Guard refused to release him.

A group of soldiers announced on national television that Bazoum’s regime has come to an end due to the deteriorating security situation and bad governance.

Reading from a statement, Colonel Amadou Abdramane said the defence and security forces had decided

Put an end to the regime that you know due to the deteriorating security situation and bad governance.”

Abdramane added that the officers have closed the country’s borders, imposed a nationwide curfew, and suspended all institutions of the republic.

Also, foreign intervention was strongly discouraged.
