The Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume representing (APC, Borno South) has met with the protesting Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Abuja.

Ndume urged the NLC and the TUC, along with other protesters at the National Assembly to halt the nationwide protest temporarily.

He asked for one week to address the demands presented to the Senate.

Protesters occupied the entrance of the Senate in the National Assembly on Wednesday, as part of their demonstration against the fuel subsidy removal and other concerns.

The demands put forth by the NLC included a request for the government to revert the fuel price to N520/litre, as opposed to the recent increase by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL to N617/litre.

The labour unions have also called for the immediate repair of the refineries in Nigeria to reduce fuel importation.

Additionally, they have requested a direct meeting between the union leadership and the President, rather than a meeting with his Chief of Staff.

Ndume, however, stated there was already a motion on the floor of the Senate, co-authored by all senators, to address the issues concerning the FG-Labour deliberations.

He urged the protesters to give the Senate one week to resolve the issues; if they were unsatisfied with the solutions offered, the unions could then embark on their proposed strike action.
