The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu has sued Governor Godwin Obaseki at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Shaibu filed the legal suit seeking protection against potential impeachment and removal from office by Obaseki.

Shaibu requested an interlocutory injunction to prevent harassment, intimidation, or embarrassment and to enable him to carry out his duties as the deputy governor, including attending State Executive Council, SEC meetings.

The tension between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu has been evident for some time, allegedly stemming from a viral video showing Shaibu with Governor Obaseki’s predecessor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, during the National Assembly inauguration in Abuja.

The motion of notice, filed on July 28, 2023, sought an order of interlocutory injunction to stop the respondents or their agents from hindering Shaibu’s functions as Deputy Governor until the substantive suit was resolved.

The Edo State Governor, Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Inspector General of Police, Department of State Services, DSS, and Chief Judge of Edo State were all listed as respondents in the lawsuit.

According to reports, Obaseki summoned all the PDP lawmakers in the state House of Assembly and reportedly left Shaibu out of important meetings, which sparked rumors about Shaibu’s potential impeachment.

An ex-deputy governor of the state, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, was said to have tried to bring the two together but his efforts reportedly had no success.
