The Parliament of Economic Communities of West African States has been left divided over plans by the regional body to use military force in Niger Republic.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS continues its attempts to restore democracy in the West African country.

However, the parliament is yet undecided on which approach should be implemented towards ensuring that ousted President, Mohammed Bazoum is returned to power.

As some members of parliament approve of the use of force, others have continued to oppose it, insisting on the diplomatic route.

The confusion is coming on the heels of a second meeting of ECOWAS leaders which directed the body’s Defence Chiefs to activate Standby Force for subsequent deployment.

The ECOWAS Parliament was meeting for the first time since on Thursday since the ousting of democracy by the military junta in Niger.

The emergency virtual session sought for ways to mitigate the ongoing crisis towards avoiding a further escalation of instability in the sub-region.

Nigerian members of the ECOWAS Parliament in particular opposed the use of military citing a potential lead to uncontrollable consequences.

The Parliament is to hold another summit in the days ahead to take a decisive position.

Meanwhile, it resolved to set up up an adhoc mediation committee to visit Niger republic and meet with the military leader.
