The Nigerian Military has said no cash was taken during an attack on a Hilux military vehicle in Benin City, the capital of Edo State, on Wednesday by armed men.

The army’s Deputy Director of Public Relations, Yemi Sokoya revealed in a statement after reports claimed that the robbers carted away huge sums of cash.

Sokoya said: “Entirely false as no cash was involved.”

According to him, contrary to speculation, a 4th Brigade finance office worker and a driver drove into town to fix office printers and even stopped at a bank to process and obtain bank statements.

He narrated that the armed group traveling in a red Toyota Camry must have followed and noticed that the soldiers were unarmed, so they opened fire on the vehicle, at the crossroads, thinking that the soldiers were carrying money.

He explained that when they found the car empty, they rushed in and fled.

Unfortunately, he revealed, several bullets entered the driver’s chest and caused him to die at the hospital.

The statement read:

“The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a series of inaccurate narratives in the media space in respect to the attack on a military Hilux vehicle at Akpakpava road in Benin City Edo State by some armed gunmen on Wednesday 23 August 2023.”

He added that the Nigerian military has agreed with other security agencies to track down the armed gang that attacked a Hilux military vehicle in Benin City.
