The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has spoken out on the suspension of its ex-chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that the Bawa was suspended by President Bola Tinubu and subsequently arrested by the Department of State Services over allegations bothering on abuse of office.

According to the anti-graft agency, Bawa’s arrest and continued detention has not for once stopped it from carrying out its statutory duty.

EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said Bawa’s detention has not prevented the commission from probing both high- and low-profile persons suspected of corrupt practices.

Since Bawa’s arrest in June by the DSS, the EFCC is yet to probe any high-profile suspect.

None of the former governors such as Bello Matawalle, Yahaya Bello and Kayode Fayemi, who were under probe prior to Bawa’s arrest have been invited or probed after his suspension.

Bawa has spent more than 75 days in the custody of the Department of State Service and was replaced with Abdulkarim Chukkol as acting chairman.

Most notably, Bawa had revealed in May 2023 that the EFCC was investigating Matawalle over an alleged N70bn contract fraud.

The commission also announced a probe on Governor Yahaya Bello and some of his relatives over 14 properties and N400million alleged to be proceeds of corruption months before that.

Also, Fayemi was announced to be under investigation and was invited by the EFCC for an alleged misappropriation of N4billion.

Bawa’s continued detention has continued to raise eyebrows from various lawyers, most notably Femi Falana (SAN), who described the development as illegal.
