NLC, TUC Gives Govs Ultimatum on N35k Minimum Wage

The Federal Government has insisted on the importance of embracing social dialogue as a more effective alternative for resolving industrial disputes, with the aim of enhancing industrial stability in Nigeria.

The recommendation was put forth by both the Minister of Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, during the second National Labour Adjudication and Arbitration Forum held in Abuja on Tuesday.

The forum witnessed the participation of key figures, including Justice Benedict Kanyip, the President of the National Industrial Court, Taiwo Adeniyi, the President of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), and leaders from various workers’ unions, such as Joe Ajaero of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The primary objective of the gathering was to cultivate a healthy and stable relationship between employers and employees in Nigeria.

Ongoing negotiations regarding a new minimum wage were also prominently discussed during the forum.

Recall that last Thursday, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, urging them to fulfill the 16-point agreement made with workers since October 2023.

Given the recurrent nature of protests and industrial actions within Nigeria’s labor ecosystem, this forum strongly believes that such confrontations should be discouraged.
