The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has announced the death of no fewer than 46 professors and lecturers across tertiary institutions in Abuja.

This was revealed by the ASUU Abuja zone, citing the current spate of hardship being experienced in Nigeria as the cause of their deaths.

As reported by The Punch, the academic body attributed the death of the lecturers to poor remuneration of academics and unfavorable working conditions across the country.

According to ASUU, the deceased lecturers are affiliated with the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA); the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna); Federal University of Lafia (FULafia); Nasarawa State University, Keffi; and the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai.

Among those who passed away include an eminent Professor of Fisheries, Johnson Oyero, of FUTMinna, who reportedly passed away as a result of his inability to afford quality medical facilities.

In a statement on Monday, February 19, Salahu Muhammed, ASUU coordinator, Abuja zone, said;

“It is also worthy of note that the union has lost several members during the period under review due to herculean working conditions, psychological and emotional stress, and diseases related to these conditions. “For instance, universities in the Abuja zone have lost 46 members.”
