Raheem Sterling, the England international, faced criticism after intervening as Chelsea’s designated penalty taker, Cole Palmer, prepared to take a spot kick during the 4-2 FA Cup quarter-final triumph over Leicester City.

Former Arsenal player Martin Keown voiced disapproval of Raheem Sterling actions. Despite Sterling’s attempt, the penalty was saved, and he later assumed responsibility for a close-range free kick in the second half, which he failed to convert.

Keown, offering commentary for BBC Sport during the match, expressed disagreement with Sterling’s decision to override Palmer.

“That’s a ridiculous effort,” Keown remarked. “Obviously Sterling is doing his best there, but Cole Palmer has to take that, end of.”

Keown also highlighted the potential negative impact of Sterling’s actions on young players like Palmer.

“You saw that with Cole Palmer not taking the free kick, then you go back to the penalty where Sterling takes it,” Keown elaborated. “Here again now Sterling is calling rank on a very talented player, but he’s a young player.”
