The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria has issued a call to action to both federal and state governments to implement sustainable policies aimed at eradicating poverty and enhancing the standard of living for citizens.

The plea was made in a communiqué released at the conclusion after their general meeting in Abuja on Thursday, signed by the conference’s chairman, Adebo Ogundoyin.

While acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s bold steps in introducing economic policies such as the removal of petroleum product subsidies and floating the exchange rate, Ogundoyin argued that these measures have had severe unintended consequences for citizens.

He stressed the need for a more subtle approach to address the economic challenges facing the nation.

The conference also lamented over the lack of financial autonomy for state legislatures, despite constitutional provisions guaranteeing such autonomy.

Ogundoyin urged all relevant stakeholders to adhere to constitutional provisions and desist from violating them.

In addition, the conference appealed for a peaceful resolution of the political crisis in Rivers State, urging political leaders to explore amicable means to address the impasse between the legislative and executive arms of government.

Furthermore, the conference backed the establishment of state police forces to combat the country’s pervasive security challenges.

According to the chairman, the need for state police is to curb the negative trend of insecurity in Nigeria.

Finally, the conference urged the National Assembly, Presidency, and other stakeholders to utilize the ongoing constitution review process to promote national cohesion and development.

By working together, the conference believed, they can create a more prosperous and harmonious nation for all citizens.
