Shell’s Contribution to NDDC Hits $142.5m in 2023

Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria Limited (SPDC) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), contributed $142.5 million to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in 2023.

The contribution was revealed in a statement issued on Wednesday by Igo Weli, SPDC Director and Country Head, Corporate Relations and signed by the Manager in charge of Communications, Media and Non-governmental Organisations (NGO) Relations, Bamidele Odugbesan.

In it, Weli stated that the payment represents a substantial increase from the previous year’s contribution of $79.77 million.

He explained that the SPDC paid $112.5 million, while SNEPCo remitted $30 million, demonstrating their commitment to supporting the development of the Niger Delta region.

According to him, the contributions were part of the companies’ statutory obligations to the NDDC, made on behalf of themselves and their partners, including NNPC, TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited, NAOC, and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited.

He said:
“Our support for NDDC is part of our aspirations for the development of the Niger Delta which has also seen a wide range of social investments, including health and education.

“With the continuous support of our partners, we will continue to discharge our obligations to communities through statutory payments to agencies and projects executed in partnership with stakeholders.”

Shell Companies in Nigeria have a long history of supporting community development programs, dating back to the 1960s, and have positively impacted many lives.

Their support for education has led to numerous scholarships and grants, while their Health-in-Motion program has provided free medical services to over one million individuals since its inception.

The statement further confirmed that their entrepreneurship program, Shell LiveWIRE has supported 73 businesses, creating 97 employment opportunities for Nigerians.
