Lautaro Martinez scored a stunning extra-time goal to give Argentina a 1-0 win over Colombia in the Copa America final on Sunday, securing a record 16th title for the Albiceleste.

The win was marred by security and crowd issues, which caused a 82-minute delay, but Martinez’s quality finish was enough to decide the game.

Argentina won their third straight major tournament title, following their 2021 Copa victory and 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar.

However, the win was bittersweet as captain Lionel Messi went off injured in the 66th minute, watching the rest of the game in tears on the bench.

“It was a very difficult game, but we knew that we had to give everything to win,” said Martinez. “I’m very happy to have scored the winner, it’s a dream come true.”

The game was marked by security and crowd issues, with fans struggling to enter the stadium. Organizers blamed supporters for trying to enter without tickets, while fans blamed the lack of an efficient entry system.

“There were some problems with the fans, but we tried to stay focused on the game,” said Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. “We knew that it was going to be a tough game, but we were able to get the win.”

Colombia had their chances, with Jhon Corboba hitting the post in the seventh minute. However, Argentina’s quality eventually told, with Martinez scoring the winner in extra-time.

“I’m very proud of my team, we gave everything we had,” said Colombia coach Nestor Lorenzo. “We were unlucky to lose, but we’ll keep working hard.”

The win was also an emotional farewell for Angel Di Maria, who played his final game for Argentina. “I’m very grateful to have been able to play for my country,” said Di Maria. “It’s been an incredible journey.”
