A deadly attack on the convoy of reinstated Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, and All Progressives Congress candidate, Monday Okpebholo, has left a police officer dead and several others injured.

The incident occurred on Thursday at the Benin Airport, where Shaibu and Okpebholo had arrived to a warm welcome from supporters.

According to eyewitnesses, the attack was carried out by gunmen in a Sienna vehicle, who opened fire on the convoy as it exited the airport.

The police officer, identified as Okon, was killed in the attack, while several others were injured.

Shaibu’s supporters had gathered at the airport to welcome him peacefully, but the attack led to a reprisal gunshot by armed security details attached to Shaibu and Okpebholo.

The Edo State Government has blamed Shaibu for the incident, accusing him of leading thugs to attack innocent citizens and unleash mayhem on private citizens.

However, Okpebholo’s aide, Godswill Inegbe, denied the allegations, stating that a prominent former member of the APC led the attack against his principal and Shaibu.

Sunny Okomayin, a close associate of Shaibu, also denied the government’s narrative, stating that Shaibu’s supporters were at the airport to receive him peacefully when the attack occurred.

The police are currently investigating the matter, and the Edo State Police Command has promised to bring those responsible to justice. The incident has raised tensions in the state, with many calling for calm and restraint.
