Senate President Godswill Akpabio has convened an emergency session of the upper legislative chamber for Wednesday, July 31, amid a planned nationwide protest scheduled to begin on August 1.

The Senate Clerk, in an internal memorandum, announced the emergency plenary sitting, stating that “issues of national importance” would be discussed.

The memo read: “Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend. We regret all inconveniences that this interruption of the recess will cause.”

This development comes just days after the Senate and House of Representatives embarked on their recess, which was scheduled to end on September 17.

The sudden recall of the Senate has sparked speculation about the nature of the “national importance” issues to be discussed.

Akpabio’s directive has raised eyebrows, particularly given the timing, with many wondering if the emergency session is connected to the planned protest.

Details of the session’s agenda remain scarce, fueling further speculation.

The emergency session is set to hold at 12 noon on Wednesday, July 31, with all senators expected to attend.
