Issa Hayatou, the former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has passed away at the age of 77, just one day before his 78th birthday.

Issa Hayatou, who led CAF for 29 years from 1988 to 2017, died on Thursday after a prolonged illness, as reported by straitstimes.com.

During his career, Hayatou also served as the acting FIFA president from 2015 to 2016, following the suspension of Sepp Blatter. However, his tenure was not without controversy.

In 2011, he faced sanctions from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for his involvement in an alleged bribery scandal at FIFA.

He was accused of accepting approximately $20,000 from the sports marketing company ISL in 1995, though he maintained that the money was a gift intended for his confederation.
