Subsidy Removal: Kano Governor Begs Marketers to Sell at Old Prices

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has warned gas stations nationwide to stop selling Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, in jerrycans.

NMDPRA’s move comes as the country faces an ongoing petrol scarcity, resulting in long queues at gas stations in major cities.

In a video shared on social media, NMDPRA officials were seen warning a gas station management to halt the illegal sale of fuel in jerrycans, citing safety concerns.

The officials threatened to withdraw the retail licenses of non-compliant gas stations, emphasizing the seriousness of the directive.

Meanwhile, the development has sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians arguing that the move will further exacerbate the fuel scarcity and high prices, which have been exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidies.

Netizens argue that the decision will disproportionately affect the poor, who rely on petrol to power their generators due to the unreliable power supply.
