The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that the devastating floodwaters in Maiduguri, Borno State, are finally beginning to recede, and normalcy is slowly returning to the metropolis.

Director-General Zubaida Umar revealed this in a statement on Thursday, providing an update on the situation.

While acknowledging that their work is far from over, Umar was relieved that the flood levels are decreasing, and search and rescue operations are ongoing.

She reported that over 400,000 people have been affected, with many temporarily sheltered in eight camps provided by the State Government. Others are being accommodated by relatives in safer areas.

To prevent water-borne diseases, NEMA has deployed three water purification trucks and is partnering with chemical companies to purify household water.

It has also warned residents to be vigilant about harmful aquatic animals, particularly snakes.

Umar assured the public that the government is mobilizing resources for recovery and will continue to provide necessary support to ensure the safety and welfare of those affected.

The flooding was caused by a broken spillway from the Alau Dam, resulting in one of the worst flooding occurrences in Nigeria’s history.
