A devastating flood has swept through Azuoto, Okpuitumo Community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The disaster has destroyed numerous farmlands and properties worth millions of naira, leaving residents in a state of despair.

Chinyere Nworie, a victim of the flood, recounted her harrowing experience to journalists in Abakaliki on Friday.

Nworie revealed that her rice, yam, and cassava farms were completely submerged by the floodwaters, resulting in a great loss.

She explained that this was not an isolated incident, as the community has been plagued by flooding every year due to its proximity to the Azuoto and Ebony rivers, which are linked to the River Niger.

The flood, which occurred on Saturday following heavy downpour on Friday, has affected no fewer than 96 households in the area.

Residents are struggling to come to terms with the extent of the damage, with many appealing to the government for urgent assistance.

Amauche Agbo, another affected resident, described the situation as “unfortunate” and called for swift action to mitigate the suffering of the victims.

In response to the disaster, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Uche Oba, announced that an assessment of the affected communities is underway.

Oba acknowledged that the flooding has become a worrisome phenomenon for the state government and assured that efforts are being made to provide relief materials to those affected.
