Nigerian football icon Segun Odegbami has voiced concerns over Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa’s plans to return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), suggesting it might be part of a strategy to rejoin the national team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Recently, Ahmed Musa hinted at the possibility of returning to the NPFL. The 31-year-old has had two previous stints with Kano Pillars in the Nigerian top league. Odegbami, however, believes there is more to this decision than meets the eye.
“It’s being reported that, six months after stepping away from the national team and not landing a contract overseas, Musa is set to rejoin Kano Pillars FC this season,” Odegbami was quoted saying by Complete Sports.

He added, “He seems to be aiming to use this ‘project’ as a pathway back into the Super Eagles squad for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.”
Odegbami went on to express skepticism, noting that few Nigerian players have returned to the NPFL to close out their careers, with most struggling to leave a lasting impact.
“This is also wishing him the very best of luck in this ambitious new adventure,” Odegbami concluded.
