The All Progressives Congress (APC) has downplayed the significance of a potential alliance between Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

They asserted that it poses no threat to its electoral dominance ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.

In an interview with Punch, APC’s National Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, confidently stated that the proposed alliance would likely fail, drawing parallels to previous attempts that fell short.

He cited a “lack of trust” between the two leaders as a major barrier, emphasizing that neither politician would be willing to relinquish their presidential ambitions.

Ibrahim remarked, “These are experiments that have been conducted several times, and the results cannot be expected to change unless the factor responsible for that result changes.”

He further noted that past attempts at collaboration between Kwankwaso and Obi “didn’t last beyond the bedroom,” highlighting their conflicting ambitions and egos.

This commentary follows Kwankwaso’s recent indication of openness to serving as Obi’s running mate under certain undisclosed conditions, which has sparked discussions of a potential merger between their parties.

Labour Party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk, expressed optimism about the collaboration, suggesting that it could succeed if both leaders prioritize unity over personal ambitions.

Despite the ongoing discussions, Ibrahim maintained that any alliance would not disrupt President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, asserting that it amounts to mere rhetoric in response to the APC’s progress and success in the political arena.

Conversely, the National Deputy Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abdullahi Ibrahim, welcomed the prospect of an Obi-Kwankwaso alliance, viewing it as a potential avenue for challenging the APC’s governance.

He emphasized the importance of opposition unity to address the nation’s challenges, stating, “It is in the interest of this country for those who have the wherewithal to ensure they salvage the people from despair.”
