  • The Presidency has criticised former President Olusegun Obasanjo for condemning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to declare a State of Emergency in Rivers State.

  • Obasanjo had stated that “Democracy is not about power grabbing illegally and telling victims to go to court.”

The Presidency has fired back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo for criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to declare a State of Emergency in Rivers State.

Obasanjo, speaking at the birthday colloquium of former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, stated that “Democracy is not about power grabbing illegally and telling victims to go to court.”

The Presidency, through the Special Assistant to Tinubu on Social Media, Olusegun Dada, described Obasanjo as the “grandfather of hypocrisy” in Nigeria.

Dada accused Obasanjo of turning himself into a kingmaker and a demigod during his second term in office between 2003-2004.

“Coming to Obasanjo’s remarks at the Ihedioha Colloquium, it is obvious that OBJ is trying every trick possible to whitewash his bad democratic records by trying to exonerate himself from blame for how Nigeria’s democracy has fared,” Dada said.

Dada further cited Obasanjo’s past actions, including his declaration of a state of emergency in Plateau State and suspension of Governor Joshua Dariye and the state assembly in 2004.

“In Obasanjo’s case, his reason for suspending Dariye and the Plateau legislature is because Gov. Dariye failed to act to end a cycle of violence between Plateau State’s Muslim and Christian communities. He didn’t accuse the Plateau assembly of anything, yet he suspended them. Ironically OBJ is criticising Tinubu for suspending Gov. Fubara and Rivers House of Assembly members who are the direct actors that created the emergency in Rivers State,” Dada said.
