The company revealed the development in a statement on Monday, disclosing that the new features include channel subscriptions, promoted channels, and adverts in status, all designed to drive commercial activity without disrupting the platform’s core private messaging function.

According to Meta, the introduction of these features marks a significant step in building a business model on WhatsApp that respects user privacy. The company stated that users will now be able to subscribe to their favourite channels for a monthly fee in exchange for exclusive content from news outlets, influencers, and sports organisations.

It added that promoted channels would allow WhatsApp to recommend relevant channels to users based on their interests, offering creators and businesses the opportunity to pay for increased visibility and audience growth.

On adverts in status, Meta explained that the feature will function similarly to Instagram Stories, giving businesses the ability to display targeted promotional content within the status section, while allowing users to discover new products and interact directly with advertisers.

Meta emphasised that personal chats, calls, and group messages will remain end-to-end encrypted, and the new commercial tools will operate in ways that do not compromise user privacy.

The company said it would use limited data such as country, city, language, followed channels, and ad engagement to personalise adverts, while also noting that users who have linked their WhatsApp accounts to Meta’s Accounts Centre may receive more tailored adverts across Meta’s platforms.

However, Meta assured users that it would never sell or share their phone numbers with advertisers, stressing that all data usage would comply with strict privacy standards.

The new features are expected to be introduced gradually over the coming months, while channel administrators and interested businesses have been urged to access more details through official WhatsApp Business resources.
