The Sweden international, who finished last season as the Premier League’s second-highest scorer, skipped Newcastle’s pre-season and missed the opening match, a goalless draw at Aston Villa.

Reports say Liverpool offered £110m, which Newcastle rejected as they held out for up to £150m.

Isak also skipped the PFA awards despite being named in the Premier League 2024/25 team of the year.

Isak said:

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue.”

Isak–Newcastle Row Draws Club Legend Alan Shearer’s Reaction

Shearer called the situation “an absolute mess” and blamed Isak’s agent, Vlado Lemic. He said the player should have signed a long-term deal rather than air grievances publicly.

“I just think even releasing this statement… has thrown flames onto the fire, which he didn’t need to do,” – Shearer said.

Newcastle say a promised contract improvement stalled because of financial sustainability rules, and they stress no official agreed Isak could leave this summer.

The club added: “Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”

Since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022, Isak has scored 62 goals in 109 appearances, including the League Cup final winner that ended Newcastle’s 70-year wait for silverware.

Liverpool remain linked as they hunt attacking options, but any transfer looks unlikely before the sides meet at St James’ Park.

To resolve the Isak Newcastle dispute, both parties must set a clear timeline and communicate fast if they want to repair trust and focus on the season.
