At Wednesday’s online meeting, ex-captain Kikelomo Ajayi, vice-captain Prisca Emeafu and Patience Avre-Odeli praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and National Sports Commission chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko for rewarding the Falcons with cash, land and national honours after their WAFCON win in Morocco.

They said the move could inspire a new generation of players.

However, Ajayi urged the presidency to also honour earlier stars, stressing that lasting progress depends on recognising those who built the team.

Meanwhile, US-based Avre-Odeli praised Mallam Dikko and said she had passed recommendations to President Tinubu to honour former players.

“For us, it’s a new dawn for Nigerian sports,” – Avre-Odeli said.

Ireland-based Prisca Emeafu emphasised that practical support and praise are not the same thing.

She said her generation got little government assistance, revealed she needs $40,000 for knee surgery from an injury while with the Super Falcons, and recalled a serious injury during an armed robbery at the Ota camp.

“Many of my colleagues are suffering today because of irresponsible leadership,” – she added.

US-based Martha Tarhemba thanked President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and appealed for urgent medical help.

The former Super Falcons applauded the honours but asked the government to also give them pensions, medical care, and recognition in order to sustain the support.
