Man United were stunned by fourth-tier Grimsby which forced a 2–2 draw in round two of the EFL Cup at Blundell Park and then beat the Red Devils 12–11 on penalties in one of the competition’s biggest shocks.

Grimsby grabbed a 2–0 half-time lead through Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren after United slumped into early errors and failed to clear a corner.

Ruben Amorim’s rotated side looked flat and nervous despite eight changes, and Andre Onana’s mistakes left United exposed.

United fought back after the break. New signing Bryan Mbeumo curled a brilliant strike from outside the box, and Harry Maguire headed Mason Mount’s corner in the 89th minute to force extra time.

Benjamin Sesko then wasted a stoppage-time chance that would have settled the tie.

The penalty shootout kept fans on edge. Matheus Cunha saw his spot-kick saved by Christy Pym, while both goalkeepers stepped up and scored earlier in the sequence.

After 24 converted penalties, Mbeumo struck the bar with the decisive attempt and Grimsby sealed a stunning cup victory.

The same player who sparked United’s comeback suffered the cruel final twist.

The defeat piles fresh pressure on Amorim after a winless start to the Premier League and last season’s 15th-place finish – United’s poorest since 1974.

It also revived talk of a late goalkeeper signing.

Grimsby and their supporters savoured the moment: Blundell Park hosted United for the first time since 1948, and the home side made it count.

Elsewhere in round two, Brighton routed Oxford 6–0, while Fulham and Everton won 2–0. For United, the League Cup exit removes a realistic route to silverware and hands critics fresh fuel.
