Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State would not have ended if he had chosen to prolong it.

Speaking on Channels Television shortly after President Bola Tinubu lifted the suspension of democratic rule on Thursday, Wike accused certain individuals of deliberately seeking to sustain the crisis in the state for personal gain.

The former governor confirmed that he had spoken with Governor Siminalayi Fubara and insisted that peace has now returned to Rivers State.

“The state of emergency would have continued if we wanted it to. There are people who are natural crisis builders who think they can only benefit when there is a crisis,” Wike said.

He added, “If we didn’t want this state of emergency lifted, we would have done one or two things to ensure that it continues.”

The emergency rule, widely condemned as illegal, ended on Thursday, allowing Governor Fubara to return to Government House and resume his duties as the democratically elected governor of Rivers State.
