Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe won the Berlin Marathon on Sunday in 2:02:16, a time that places him among the fastest marathoners ever.

The race started off at a breakneck pace, pushing the competitors toward a world record with the quickest opening kilometer ever on Berlin’s flat circuit.

Sawe stuck with the lead pack, including 2024 champion Milkesa Mengesha and Gabriel Geay, then attacked at 15km to break free.

As temperatures rose late, runners eased slightly, but Sawe held his advantage to finish strongly.

This result confirms Sawe’s rapid rise. He combined tactical maturity with raw speed, repeated his negative-split pattern, and continued improving his personal bests.

Sawe surged at 15km, opened an 11-second gap and kept it through the middle stages.

His time ranks as the ninth-fastest ever and is the fastest in the world this year.

The mark falls short of Kelvin Kiptum’s world record (2:00:35) and Eliud Kipchoge’s Berlin course record (2:01:09).

Sabastian Sawe shaved 11 seconds off his earlier 2025 best.
