Economy, inflation, and corruption shaped hotly contested polls
Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, has conceded defeat in last week’s general election, acknowledging that his rival, Professor Peter Mutharika, has secured what he described as an “insurmountable lead.”
Chakwera, 70, made the announcement in a national address on Wednesday, just hours before the electoral authority was expected to declare the official results of the September 16 vote.

“A few minutes ago, I called Professor Mutharika to wish him well,” Chakwera said. “It is clear that my rival has an insurmountable lead over me.”
The former pastor and leader of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) rose to power in 2020 after defeating Mutharika. His presidency, however, was dogged by accusations of corruption, indecisiveness, and failure to create jobs.

Economic hardship dominated the campaign. Inflation surged to 33 per cent, with prices of maize and fertiliser skyrocketing, putting pressure on the agriculture-dependent population.
“In the days that remain, I want you to know that I am committed to a peaceful transfer of power,” Chakwera added, urging calm among his supporters.
The final announcement by the election commission is expected to officially return Mutharika, a constitutional law expert and candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party, to power.
