The Chairman stressed that continuous self-development is crucial for Lagos State teachers to keep pace with global educational standards and emerging trends. She explained that the theme of this year’s event, “The Impact of Industrial Relations Policies on Teachers’ Performance,” was carefully chosen to help stakeholders understand how workplace policies directly affect job satisfaction, conditions of service, and productivity.
“As a commission and as a government, we remain committed to fair treatment, reasonable workloads, and timely compensation for teachers,” Peregrino said. She also assured that grievance resolution mechanisms would continue to be strengthened to improve morale and inspire higher performance in schools.
She added that the annual colloquium was designed to unite key stakeholders in brainstorming sessions that educate, inspire, and reinforce professionalism in the teaching profession. According to her, Lagos State teachers can only thrive when they embrace continuous training and self-development while adapting to modern educational standards.

Guest lecturer Isaac Olatunde emphasized the importance of cooperation between teachers and their employers, describing harmony as key to achieving optimal results in the education sector.
He noted that while teachers are expected to meet targets, the government must also guarantee their welfare. Olatunde further stressed that professionalism in teaching requires balance, where responsibility meets adequate support from authorities.
In his remarks, the Lagos State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Akintoye Hassan, stressed that meeting the UNESCO-recommended ratio of one teacher to 25 students remains a challenge. He, however, welcomed ongoing recruitment drives by TESCOM for secondary schools and SUBEB for primary schools as positive steps.
Hassan further renewed the union’s demand for the state government to implement the 65-year retirement age policy for teachers, insisting that it would benefit Lagos State teachers and promote professionalism in teaching across the state.
