The backlash intensified after one of Wike’s sons was seen on a trip to China for discussions on water and infrastructure projects, with some accusing him of grooming his sons for political roles.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has addressed criticisms over the presence of his sons during official duties, including project inspections and international work trips.
In a BBC Pidgin interview aired on Saturday, Wike responded to viral photos and videos showing his sons accompanying him on infrastructure inspections in Abuja and, more recently, on a work visit to China.

The trip was centered on securing partnerships for FCT water and infrastructural development.
Reacting to public concerns that he was grooming his sons for future political roles, the minister dismissed the claims. When the interviewer raised the issue, Wike replied in Pidgin.

“Which of them, because I get two sons?” After viewing the photo of the specific son in question, Wike smiled and said, “Oh! That? Oh! Handsome boy!”
He continued, “Yes, wetin dey wrong in that?” When pressed further on Nigerians’ fears of political grooming, the former Rivers State governor shot back, “Wetin dey wrong with that?”
