Tension has gripped several communities in Kano State after suspected bandits killed seven villagers, kidnapped ten others, and stole about 70 cows in a fresh attack on the Shanono Local Government Area.

The gunmen, who reportedly stormed the area from neighbouring Katsina State on Tuesday night, unleashed violence on Faruruwa, Kuraku, Gorondutse, Tsaura, and Yanshadu villages, leaving destruction in their wake.

Speaking to journalists in Kano on Thursday, the Chairman of the Shanono Community Security Committee, Alhaji Yahaya Umar Gogobir, said the latest assault had deepened the sense of fear among residents. According to him, about 50 armed men on motorcycles raided Faruruwa village, killing innocent residents and carting away livestock.

He revealed that the communities have been under constant attacks since 2022, losing more than ten prominent members and over 1,600 animals, in addition to paying millions of naira in ransom.

“Tuesday’s attack has made our situation unbearable. People no longer sleep in their homes, and many have started moving to Kano city to avoid being killed,” Gogobir lamented.

He further expressed frustration over the limited security presence in the area, noting that only ten joint task force operatives with one patrol vehicle are responsible for covering all the affected villages.

“The bandits move around freely, attacking anytime they wish; morning, afternoon, or night. They shoot carelessly, steal our cows, and disappear without challenge. It’s as if our lives no longer matter,” he said.

Gogobir appealed to the federal government and security agencies for urgent intervention, warning that if nothing is done soon, the ongoing attacks could spark a major humanitarian crisis in Kano.

“We are begging the authorities to step in before our communities are completely destroyed. Our people are suffering, and we cannot continue like this,” he added.
