- Troost-Ekong retires after Super Eagles miss 2026 World Cup
- Decision influenced by contract and playing-time requirements in Saudi Arabia
- Defender announced retirement to teammates in the dressing room
- His exit leaves a leadership gap ahead of AFCON 2025
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has confirmed his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable era in the national team. The announcement came shortly after Nigeria’s painful failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to reports, the decision was tied to his contract situation at Saudi Arabian side Al Kholood, where he must meet a set number of appearances to secure his future at the club. Participation in AFCON 2025 would have put that requirement at risk.

Ekong reportedly informed his teammates immediately after the loss to DR Congo, breaking the news behind closed doors.
“He made up his mind earlier but waited until after the match to tell the squad,” a source said.
It was in the dressing room that the 32-year-old confirmed he would still travel with the Super Eagles to Morocco, but only in a supportive capacity, not as a player.

Troost-Ekong leaves behind an impressive legacy. He made his debut 10 years ago in an AFCON qualifier against Chad and went on to form the famous ‘Oyibo Wall’ with Leon Balogun. The pair were pivotal in Nigeria’s qualification for the 2018 World Cup.
His greatest achievement came at AFCON 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire when he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, even though Nigeria finished runners-up.
His retirement comes at a time when the team needs defensive leadership, particularly after 19-year-old Benjamin Fredrick was ruled out of AFCON 2025 due to injury.
Ekong joined Al Kholood in August 2024 and remains under contract until 2026, with an option to extend.
With the NFF expected to release the provisional squad for Morocco soon, Troost-Ekong’s absence is set to dominate discussions as the Super Eagles prepare for a new era without their captain.
