Nigeria’s Super Eagles have received a $500,000 reward following their painful exit from the 2025 AFCON after a penalty shootout loss to host nation Morocco. The reward was confirmed by BUA Group Chairman, Abdul Samad Rabiu, who praised the team’s courage, unity, and fighting spirit despite the defeat.

The Super Eagles bowed out of the AFCON 2025 semi-finals on Wednesday night after losing 4-2 on penalties to Morocco at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The tightly contested match ended in a draw after regulation and extra time, before Morocco edged Nigeria in the shootout.

Reacting to the result, Mr Abdul Samad Rabiu took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account to applaud the players for their commitment and determination throughout the tournament.

“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage on the pitch. Every Nigerian is proud of you,” Rabiu wrote.

He stressed that football results do not always reflect the effort put in by players, adding that the Super Eagles had won the hearts of Nigerians both at home and abroad.

“Sometimes our best efforts don’t bring the outcome we desire, but the spirit and unity you displayed truly matter,” he said.

“I am going ahead with the $500,000 pledge in recognition of your hard work, dedication, and the joy you brought to our nation.”

The BUA chairman had earlier promised the reward after Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Encouraging the team to stay focused, Rabiu expressed confidence that the experience gained from AFCON 2025 would push the Super Eagles toward greater success in future tournaments.

“Keep your heads high. This experience will fuel greater victories. Nigeria believes in you,” he added.
