The Chief Imam of Ilorin, Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu, has passed away at the age of 75, marking the end of an era for Islamic leadership in Kwara State and the Ilorin Emirate.
Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu, a revered Islamic scholar and spiritual leader, died on Monday, January 19, 2026, in Ilorin.
Born and raised in Ilorin, Kwara State, the late cleric dedicated his entire life to Islamic scholarship, teaching, and community service. Through decades of religious devotion and learning, he rose to become one of the most respected Islamic authorities in the state.
He was appointed the 12th Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate in 1983 by the late Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Zuluqarnain Muhammadu Gambari, following the death of Imam Musa Ahmad. Sheikh Saliu held the position for more than four decades, offering spiritual guidance to generations of Muslims.
Popularly known as Imam Fulani, Sheikh Saliu was admired for his humility, deep knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence, and commitment to peace within the Emirate.
His legacy is also deeply rooted in family history. His father, Imam Saliu Omo Onida Abdulkadir, served as the 7th Chief Imam of Ilorin, making his leadership a continuation of a long-standing religious lineage.
“Sheikh Muhammad Bashir Saliu lived a life of service, scholarship, and devotion to Allah and humanity,” a senior Islamic leader in Ilorin said.
The passing of the Chief Imam has drawn tributes from scholars, traditional rulers, and worshippers across the state, many describing him as a pillar of faith and moral guidance.
